sources of information - original ideas are very important when making a movie, these can come from a dream, a conversation with a friend or just everyday thought.
Producer- wherever the idea comes from it is the producer who decides to make the idea into a reality.
Director- the director is the one who can visualise a script and also make it a reality, they know how to take a story and put it on the big screen.
Writer- the writer defines and clarifies the idea, the plot and the main characters and turns it into something tangible.
Treatment- the writer will then write a treatment a one page description of the main story and characters of the film.
A pitch- a pitch contains all the information the producer needs in order to sell the idea to the financiers to commission the script.
Pitching the Project- the producer uses the treatment and pitch plus his/her powers of pusuasion to get money to develop the script.
Production companies- The producer then approaches film production companies for development money, but they have projects of their own.
Sales Distribution and Broadcast- The producer can offer future sales and broadcast rights to the film in return for money to develop the script.
Public investment- The producer can also apply to a public funding body such as the uk film council for a development grant.
Private finance- The producer can also pith the idea to private investors. In the hope that they will help the project.
Synopsis- First the writer produces a synopsis and he and the producer agree or not on the key scenes and events in the film.
Step outline- Most writers create a step to outline thier script (a plan)
Draft- part of the writers fee is conditional on delivery of ther first draft. this can be one of the hardest parts of screenwriting.
Revisions- after the draft has been done it is shown to the financiers and they will have their own ideas.
when everyone is happy with the script is is then the final draft. the writer then gets paid.
the cast- one common way to make the script more commercial is to attach well know stars to the film.
HODS- the heads of department, these people are well respected, commercialy respected and successful heads of department. make all the big decisions.
Detailed budget and production schedule- to turn the film into a propper business proposition the producer must know how much the film will actually cost to make.
1st day of principal photography- this is the key moment in film production. Shooting begins. Funding is released. and the producer breathes a huge sigh of relief.
Camera- the camera deparment is responsible for getting all the footage that the director need to tell the story.
lighting and sound- once the lighting and sound is set up and the hair and makeup is done , the shot can begin.
Acting- in the midst of all the commotion the actors must create and emotional world and suck the audience into the film.
special physical effects- every special effect is carefully constructed and must be done with the minimal risk of injury. to cast and crew.
The chain of command- film productions are run with military precisioniff they fall behind the finaciers and insurers may step in.
Rough cut- as the prosessed footage comes in. The editor assembles it into scenesand created a narrative sequence for the film.
Post production sound- once the piture is locked, the sound departmentworks on the audio track laying, creating and editing every sound.
Digital effects and titles- digial effects are added by specialist effects compositors and titles and credits are added in a compositing suite.
Grade and colour- the final stage of the pictire edit is to adjust the colour and establish the fine easthetic of the film.
Final mix- After picture lock, the rough sound mix goes to a dubbing theatre where the sound mixer sets the final levels.
Final cut- after the final cut the film reaches full lock. It is now finished and ready for duplication.
Selling the product- To help the producer sell the film she/he must get the help of a sales agent ( a spechialist) who will help sell the film to distributers.
The trailer- to help sell the film a trailer is made to show the film buyers the most marketable aspects of the film.
Screenings- A high profile screening at of of the top film festivals can be a great way to generate 'heat' around the film.
The deal- the producer not has a hot product and can negotiate good deals with distributors around the world.
The marketing team- to help sell to the distributers merchendise to producer hires a sales agent.
The audience- knowing how important the audience is to the marketing film they gather feedback which will help them with their job.
Advertising- The potential target audience are targeted with posters, cinima trailers, tv spots and other advertising methods.
Selling the film to exhibitors- in order to get the film to audiences the distributermust negotiate a deal with the ciniemas to screen it.
